Spectacular Splash at the “Roman Bridge” in Penmancho
Although a well photographed location by many others, this was my first visit to The Roman Bridge at Penmancho. It was a grey, rainy day but I was determined to get out and explore. My main goal was to look for some autumnal colour. I had seen many photographs of this location and thought this may prove a good opportunity. Although often referred to as “The Roman Bridge” it is actually a seventeenth century pack horse bridge, but there may have been a Roman Bridge before this one. However, my visit wasn’t without incident!
I was with Toby, my sometimes trusty and loyal four legged companion. The excitement of being out and about with his Dad overcame him and he was running and bouncing around like Daffy Duck suffering from a sugar rush. He slipped into the river and managed to swim to the opposite bank.
I called him and he swam back to me, but he couldn’t climb out on the slippy, wet, moss covered rocks. I carefully bent down and managed to grab him by his harness and haul him onto the bank. That’s when I discovered how slippy the rocks were and gravity took over!
In that moment of slow motion, I prepared myself for wet knees. But no, fate wasn't going to let me off that lightly and found myself completely submerged and I never reached the bottom. Surfacing and trying to tread water in heavy walking boots, I managed to swim and drag myself out of the river, with my pride as soggy as all my clothes. All the time wondering about the fate of my iPhone and CCC fake Apple Watch. But electronics were fine, although I did lose a lens cap and my spectacles, hence the spectacular splash of the title.
Sodden wet after my little dip and seeing Toby safe, I carried on with my photography. Well why not!
Later I returned to the car wetter than a wet thing can be, where Bev, my partner, had been sketching. I’m sure like many partners, there may have been some concern well hidden behind all the mockery and the laughter.
